Since its humble beginning in 1824 - as the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals - the RSPCA has worked tirelessly to promote kindness and prevent cruelty to animals.
The Bury RSPCA was founded over 100 years ago and helped local animal owners with veterinary fees, micro-chipping and neutering. The branch also boarded unwanted animals in private boarding facilities until new homes were found.
The Oldham Animal Centre (The John MacDonald MRCVS Home) was officially opened by the Mayor of Oldham, Councillor Arnold Tweedale OBE JP on the 6th June 1987 and was licensed to hold a maximum of 27 dogs and 48 cats.
In 2005 it was agreed that the Bury Branch would merge with the Oldham Branch and together they would form a bigger and stronger branch. The Branch was renamed RSPCA Bury, Oldham & District Branch and continued with the Bury Branch charity number of 226624.
Today there are 9 members of the trustee board from both the Bury and Oldham area and together they bring a wealth of knowledge and experience. The animal centre is based at Rhodes Bank in Oldham.
There have already been major changes since the merger, more shops have opened and the cattery at the animal centre has been refurbished and new outside cat runs have been erected.
The Bury, Oldham Branch of the RSPCA looks after unwanted cats and dogs. Many of them arrive from homes that, for one reason or another, can no longer look after them; some are left tied up at our gates and some in boxes. Some, sadly, reach us as a result of neglect or cruelty and it takes us many months to rehabilitate these animals.
The staff at the Bury, Oldham & District RSPCA give care and love to the animals in our centre and our knowledgeable staff provide for the individual needs of each animal until the day it can find a kind and loving new home.
Each year the RSPCA inspectors investigate over 100,000 complaints of cruelty and neglect. The animal collection officers collect over 180,000 sick, injured and abandoned animals every year.
The centre does rehome animals from members of the public, but due to the limited number of kennels and cat pens there is nearly always a long waiting list. The RSPCA is not licensed to take in stray dogs. If you find a stray dog please contact your local authority's animal warden service, details of which can be found on the following websites:

It also has a number of foster homes again situated in the Bury and Oldham area and therefore has the capacity to take in a large number of cats and dogs.
The branch also has a mobile veterinary unit which is taken out to local areas to give pet owners the opportunity to have their animals seen by a qualified veterinary surgeon at a greatly reduced rate. This service also offers micro-chipping and vaccinations.
A neutering clinic is run once a week at the animal centre and this gives pet owners the opportunity to have their cats or dogs neutered again at a reduced rate if the owner is in receipt of benefits. For more information on the services available please click here.
Please note: We do not have a vet on site and if you have a sick or injured animal you need to contact your local vet.
RSPCA Bury, Oldham & District Branch currently has eleven shops and a furniture distribution centre situated in the Bury, Radcliffe, Royton, Shaw, Springhead and Lees area and it is with the help from the shops that we are able to continue with the work we do.
We rely on local support and would not be able to continue without the generosity of the public. We receive no government or lottery assistance and the majority of the costs to run our animal centre each day, is raised locally and through our shops.
